Local competitions followed until he enlisted in the Army and put his experience to use in Euorpe during World War I. He became a successful motorcycle racer, rising to the level of National Champion in 1921. Despite serving for thirty years as a Pasadena, California motor patrol officer, he set numerous speed records through the 1920's and 1930's at Daytona Beach, the Bonnerville Salt Flats, and a stretch of public road near San Bernardino.
